The ability of cells to detect and respond to environmental fluctuations is a critical ingredient of life. Modern omics technology is providing an ever more comprehensive blueprint of the molecular networks that mediate cellular sensing and signaling. However, experimental characterization of this blueprint has lagged behind, and we do not understand what most of its parts do and how they fit together.
